What is a CVT gearbox?
A CVT (continuously variable transmission) has no fixed gears. It uses a steel belt between two pulleys to change ratio smoothly, which helps save fuel. Many popular cars in Malaysia now use CVT. It works differently from a normal automatic gearbox, so it needs a workshop that knows CVT.
Common CVT problems
If your car does any of these, get it checked early.
Shudder when moving off
The car shakes or vibrates when you start moving from a stop.
Whining or humming noise
A whining sound that gets louder as you speed up.
RPM goes up, car does not
The engine revs high but the car feels slow, like it is slipping.
Jerk or delay
The car jerks, or waits a moment before moving after you put it in D or R.
Warning light or weak power
Gearbox or engine light comes on, or the car suddenly has little power.
Problems when hot
Fine when cold, but acts up after a long drive or in a traffic jam.
Cars that use CVT
Many models in Malaysia use CVT, depending on the year. Some examples:
- Perodua
- Newer Myvi and Axia, Ativa, Alza
- Honda
- City, Jazz, HR-V, Civic
- Proton
- Iriz, Exora, older Saga and Persona
- Toyota
- Vios, Yaris
- Nissan
- Almera, X-Trail

Repair or replace?
Many workshops replace the whole CVT. At Mine Cars we check first and find which part is faulty, for example a sensor, solenoid, valve body or an internal part. When it can be repaired, we fix only that part, which usually costs much less than a full replacement. If replacing really is the better choice, we explain why and show you both options before any work.

How to look after your CVT
- Change the CVT fluid on time, following your car's service book.
- Use only the CVT fluid your car needs. Normal automatic gearbox oil (ATF) is not the same.
- Do not ignore small signs like shudder or noise. Checking early often means a smaller repair.
- If the warning light comes on or the car loses power, drive gently and WhatsApp us before driving far.
CVT Questions (Q&A)
Can a CVT gearbox be repaired, or must it be replaced?
Many CVT problems can be repaired. After the free checking we tell you which part is faulty, and whether repair or replacement makes more sense, before any work.
How long does CVT repair take?
It depends on the problem and the parts needed. After checking, we tell you how many days it will take before we start.
How much does CVT repair cost?
It depends on your car and which part is faulty. That is why the checking is free: we find the exact problem first, then give you a clear quote. Nothing is done without your OK.
Can I still drive with a CVT problem?
It is best not to drive far. Driving with a slipping or overheating CVT can make the damage worse. Send us a short video on WhatsApp and we will advise you.
Is there a warranty?
Yes. Our gearbox repairs come with a 6-month warranty.
Do you only repair CVT?
No. We repair automatic, CVT, DCT and manual gearboxes, and we also do car servicing and general repairs.
