Gearbox problem? 8 signs to watch
Most gearbox problems give early warning signs. Catch them early and the repair is usually smaller and cheaper. Here are the common signs, what they can mean, and what to do next.
- Free gearbox checking

Why early signs matter
A gearbox rarely breaks all at once. It usually starts with a small jerk, a delay or a new noise. If you keep driving, one worn part can damage the parts around it, and a small repair can turn into a big one. That is why we check for free: so you know what is wrong before it gets worse.
8 common signs of a gearbox problem
These apply to automatic, CVT, DCT and manual gearboxes. Only a proper check can tell the exact cause.
Jerk or knock when changing gear
The car jolts or knocks when it shifts.
Can mean: worn clutch packs, a valve body or solenoid problem, or low or old gearbox oil.
Delay after D or R
You put it in D or R and the car waits before moving.
Can mean: low gearbox oil, worn internal seals or a pressure problem.
Slipping: RPM goes up, car does not
The engine revs high but the car does not pick up speed.
Can mean: worn clutches, a worn CVT belt or pulley, or low gearbox oil.
Whining, humming or grinding noise
A new sound that changes with speed, or grinding when you change gear.
Can mean: worn bearings, CVT wear, low oil, or worn synchros in a manual gearbox.
Warning light or weak power
Gearbox or engine light is on, or the car stays in one gear with little power.
Can mean: the car has found a fault and may be protecting the gearbox. Get it checked soon.
Burning smell
A hot or burning smell after driving, especially in traffic.
Can mean: gearbox oil overheating, often from slipping or old oil.
Oil leak under the car
Red or brown oil spots where you park.
Can mean: a leaking seal or gasket. Driving with low oil can damage the gearbox.
Shudder when moving off
The car shakes or vibrates as you start moving from a stop.
Can mean: common in CVT and DCT; can come from the oil, the clutch or the torque converter.

Simple ways to protect your gearbox
- Change the gearbox oil on time, following your car's service book.
- Use the correct oil for your gearbox type. Auto, CVT and DCT oils are not the same.
- Come to a full stop before changing between D and R.
- Do not ignore small signs. Checking early often means a smaller repair.
Questions (Q&A)
Can I keep driving if my gearbox jerks a little?
For a short distance it is usually fine, but get it checked soon. A small jerk can become a bigger problem if left too long. If you also see a warning light, a leak or a burning smell, stop driving and call us.
Will changing the gearbox oil fix the problem?
Sometimes, if the cause is old or low oil. But if a part inside is already worn, changing the oil alone may not fix it. It is better to check first so you do not spend money on the wrong fix.
Does a gearbox problem always mean a new gearbox?
No. After the free checking we tell you which part is faulty. If it can be repaired, we fix only that part, which usually costs much less than a full replacement.
How do I know if it is the gearbox or the engine?
Some engine problems feel like gearbox problems. A test drive and inspection help us tell which one it is. Both are part of our free checking.
How much does it cost to fix?
It depends on your car and which part is faulty. That is why the checking is free: we find the exact problem first, then give you a clear quote. Nothing is done without your OK.
Is there a warranty?
Yes. Our gearbox repairs come with a 6-month warranty.
